Tips for coloring geometric patterns

  1. Pick a small palette. Three or four colors are enough; repeating shapes look best when the same cell type always gets the same color.
  2. Work from the center out on mandalas and kaleidoscopes, and in rows on tessellations, so you don't lose your place.
  3. Test first. Use the color-test page to check how your pens and pencils look on your paper before starting a design.
  4. Go slow. The designs aren't in order of difficulty. Start with an open one like Eight-Point Lattice if you want something quick.

FAQ

How do I print the coloring pages?

Open the PDF in any PDF reader, choose Print, set the scale to 100% / "Actual size" and print single-sided. Each design sits on its own page, so markers won't spoil the next design.

What paper size are the pages: Letter or A4?

The PDFs are US Letter (8.5 x 11 in). To print on A4, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog; the design shrinks by about 3% and keeps its margins.

What paper works best?

Plain printer paper is fine for colored pencils. For markers, heavier paper or cardstock (65-110 lb) helps, and with alcohol markers slide a scrap sheet behind the page.

Can I share the pages or use them in products I sell?

They are for personal use: print as many copies as you like for yourself and your household. Please don't resell, share, upload or redistribute the file or its pages, or use the designs in products for sale.

Are the free pages part of the full book?

Yes. The sampler has 5 of the 50 designs in Slow Geometry, plus the license page, tips and a color-test page (8 pages in total).

How were the designs made?

The patterns were drawn by software: each page is a geometric design generated with code, then checked so that no two pages are near-duplicates and every cell is closed and colorable.
